You want to know which Calgary ward an address belongs to, who the ward's councillor represents or how the 14 wards compare in dwellings and residents. The City of Calgary publishes its ward boundaries as open data, with a separate dataset for each boundary set. This guide uses Ward Boundaries for 2021 October 18 General Election, the boundaries that took effect on election day in 2021.

Find a ward on the map

  1. Open the Calgary ward boundaries map in CanQuery. Each polygon is one ward.
  2. Zoom to an address and select the polygon covering it. The record's WardNumber field is the ward.
  3. Switch to the table view to compare wards. The City attached civic census totals to each boundary: SUM_RES_CNT (residents), SUM_DWELL_CNT (dwellings) and counts by structure type such as SUM_SING_FAMLY, SUM_DUPLEX, SUM_APARTMENT and SUM_TOWN_HOUSE, followed by age-group columns such as SUM_MF_0_4.
  4. Chart a column across the 14 rows, or export the table as CSV to work with it elsewhere.

The table has 14 rows and is prepared the first time someone opens it.

Read the fields

The census totals attached to the boundaries come from the City's civic census as it stood when the layer was published; they are a convenience for comparing wards, not a current population count. The City's civic census datasets, such as Civic Census by Ward and Dwelling Structure, carry the year and are the better source for a figure you intend to quote.

A ward boundary tells you the electoral ward, which is also the basis for the City's community-to-ward lists. It does not tell you a community association, a school catchment or a federal or provincial riding; those boundaries are published separately.

Choose the right boundary set

The City publishes several ward boundary datasets. Ward Boundaries 2017–2021 and Ward Boundaries 2013–2017 describe earlier terms; a general Ward Boundaries dataset is also listed. Check each dataset's title and the City's description before using a boundary for a date in the past, and treat the catalogue date as a listing date rather than the date a boundary changed.

Check the official source

The City of Calgary's dataset page carries the description and licence. Questions about ward representation belong with the City; CanQuery provides the map, the table and the link to the source.
