Manitoba Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Dashboard

A dashboard designed to easily and effectively display chronic wasting disease (CWD) sampling data collected over the years. It provides information on sampling and sample submission by species, hunting season, and location. This dashboard shows the results of sampling for chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer, elk, moose, and caribou. A CWD sampling program has been in place since 1997; however, Manitoba only confirmed the first positive CWD case on November 1, 2021. Since 2021, a total of 30 positive cases have been identified in Manitoba, showing the need for thorough sampling and monitoring of cervids. CWD is a fatal disease of the central nervous system of deer, elk, moose, and caribou, which belong to the deer family (cervidae). The disease is caused by one or more strains of self-propagating proteins, called prions. Prions, once transmitted, begin to spread, first in the immune system (lymph nodes and tonsils), and later in the brain, spinal cord, and other organs. There is no cure for CWD. It is always fatal, with animals generally dying within two to three years and sometimes up to five years or more from the time of infection. The dashboard shows all the data by species…
