PURPOSE: To determine fork length-at-age for striped bass (Morone saxatilis) in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence from 1973-2024. DESCRIPTION: The dataset includes the year, month and day that the fork length of striped bass (Morone saxatilis) was measured in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence. The dataset also includes age based on scale-age interpretations by experienced observers. In other striped bass populations, this is a reliable method for age determination for younger striped bass (up to about eight years), however, for older individuals, scale-age interpretations often underestimate age. This observation is consistent with published studies on striped bass age determination and validation, including work by Welch and Driebe (1993), Secor and Trice (1995), and Liao et al. (2013). USE LIMITATION: To ensure scientific integrity and appropriate use of the data, we would encourage you to contact the data custodian.
