Fall Distribution of Northern Shrimp on Eastern Scotian Shelf

Fall Distribution of Northern Shrimp on Eastern Scotian Shelf is an open dataset from Fisheries and Oceans Canada with 4 files (ESRI REST, PDF, TIFF); catalogue record updated 2026-10-13. On CanQuery you can follow the original downloads. Files are available in English and French.

The data layers (.tif) presented are the result of a delta negative binomial spatio-temporal generalized linear mixed model (i.e., a species distribution model) fit to the Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) data collected on the annual snow crab survey, which takes place yearly between August and December across the Scotian Shelf. This method accounts for the linear effects of depth and temperature on both presence/absence and positive relative abundances of Northern shrimp. The method further models latent spatial and spatio-temporal processes as random effects using Gaussian random fields with Matérn covariance matrices. The outputs are yearly spatial rasters of the predicted relative abundance of Northern shrimp across the domain covered by the snow crab survey. Given that this survey does not target shrimp, its selectivity and catchability in regards to Northern shrimp are unknown and the results remain on the scale of relative instead of absolute abundances.
