Through Bill 23, the More Homes Built Faster Act, 2022, the Province of Ontario made extensive amendments to the Ontario Heritage Act, 1990. These included the introduction of a two-year time limit on the inclusion of non-designated (listed) properties on the City’s Heritage Register. If not designated prior to the expiry date, listed properties must be removed from the Register and may not be re-listed for a period of five years. The City’s Heritage Register contains approximately 3,700 listed properties. While a handful of these properties will reach their expiration dates beginning in February of 2025, the vast majority will expire on January 1, 2027. Staff will be recommending a subset of these properties to Council for designation prior to their required removal date. Those that are not designated will be removed from the Register. Despite Heritage Register time limits, delisted properties are still important and have been identified by Council as holding cultural heritage value or interest.
