Acid Sensitive Lakes, Manitoba region

A total of 211 lakes were sampled in Manitoba, Canada in 2006 (Blocks A, B, C, and D) and 2009 (Block E) located on the Canadian Shield. These lakes were sampled to evaluate regional acid sensitivity and acidification status in potentially acid sensitive lakes. Lakes were visited in mid-September in expectation that fall overturn would have occurred thereby yielding mixed water-column samples. A visually defined, mid-lake point was selected in each lake during helicopter approach, and physical measurements were recorded. A two-litre bulk sample was collected from one metre below the surface. pH and specific conductivity were measured at the field laboratory, where the sample was then sub-sampled and processed (filtered, preserved, etc.) for chemical analysis. Samples were shipped on ice to the Great Lakes Forestry Centre located in Sault Ste.
