2021 Census: Population, Age, and Gender (CMA CSD)
This layer includes data from Statistics Canada 2021 Census of Population, including total population counts population change from previous census period, population breakdown by 5 years age groups and gender by census metropolitan area (CMA) and census subdivisions (CSD). For the first time, the 2021 census introduced the concept of gender, making the distinction between gender and sex at birth. Both concepts are different but interrelated, therefore Statistics Canada now uses ‘Male+’ and ‘Female+’ to capture this information gap. This allows all cisgender, transgender, and non-binary individuals the opportunity to report their gender. Moving forward ‘Gender’ will be Statistics Canada's default indicator, while also ensuring comparability with historical census data. Custom geography census profiles, including Electoral Districts and Neighbourhood‑level profiles, are created entirely from the long‑form (25% sample) census database. Standard geography census profiles for the Kingston CMA and CSD geographies use information from both the short‑form (100% sample) and long‑form databases, depending on the variable.
