Use of Force in Correctional Institutions

This page contains data on all use of force incidents that occurred in a provincial adult correctional institution in Ontario in the reporting calendar year. Data were extracted from Inmate Incident Reports (IIRs) in the Incident Report Management (IRM) system; all IIRs in IRM that included "use of force" as an incident type and occurred in the reporting calendar year were extracted. In alignment with the ministry’s commitment to Anti-Racism Act, 2017 (ARA) reporting, this dataset along with the Adult Inmate Profile Dataset was used to analyze race- and identity-based data in use of force incidents in correctional institutions. The resulting technical report available on Anti-Racism Act (ARA) Reporting in Corrections provides background on the data collection and reporting; a description of the data sources; an overview of the data cleaning and analytic methods; a review of the scope and limitations of the data collected; and descriptive analyses. This information is essential for understanding how to analyze the data appropriately and interpret any results from the analysis. Note: Resources on this page may be updated periodically.
