Exploration in the period 1673 to 1688 was dominated by the return of the intendant, Jean Talon, to New France. In order to keep out the English and promote the fur trade to Montréal, he encouraged a series of expeditions. The routes of nine expeditions are shown on this map: Louis Jolliet and Marquette (1673); Nouvel (1675); Dulhut (1678 to 1679); La Salle (1679); Tonty (1679); La Salle (1680); Accault, Aguel and Hennepin (1680); Dulhut (1680) and De Noyon (1688). The map also shows the extent of territory known to Europeans and the navigation of all exploration routes in the period 1651 to 1760. The historical names found on the map are derived from contemporaneous maps and written documents of the period.
