This dataset consists of images captured using optical and scanning electron microscopy of sandstones from the Lower Ordovician Theresa Formation (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada). Geophysical wireline (gamma-ray) logs in some boreholes that intersect this boundary reveal an increase in count rate in the basal part of the Theresa Formation. Five borehole cores belonging to the Geological Survey of Canada’s National Collections intersecting this stratigraphic interval were sampled for microscopic analysis. Borehole identifications are BC81-2, BC81-3, BC84-5, LB-1, and GSC Russell No.1. Core samples were made into polished thin sections and examined using a transmitted light and reflected light microscope to generate a dataset of photomicrographs. Thin sections were carbon-coated and examined using a scanning electron microscope to generate a dataset of backscattered electron micrographs. Data format is in the form of .tif and .jpg images organized into folders. Each borehole is assigned a folder with a subfolder for each sample, and subsequent subfolders with backscattered electron micrographs (.tif) and transmitted light and reflected light photomicrographs (.jpg).
