The Office of the Judge Advocate General oversees the administration of military justice. They offer legal advice to the Governor General and the Minister, as well as at bases and wings, and all across National Defence. They provide lawyers to defend accused persons at courts martial, teach courses to military members, and advise commanders on the ethical and legal principles established by both the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and the Government of Canada. This dataset includes the active case files for the current fiscal period. A case file is opened for every accused that requests Defence Counsel services and is considered the official record for Director of Defence Counsel Services (DDCS). Active cases include both the cases from the previous fiscal year that were not completed by way of finding at court martial, withdrawal or non preferral of charges, as well as cases received within the current fiscal year. The court martial – a formal military court presided over by a military judge – is designed to deal with more serious offences.
