Needle Drop Box The Community Needle Retrieval Program manages an inventory of approximately 80 needle drop boxes that are located throughout Ottawa and are publicly accessible 24/7. The weight retrieved at a needle drop box is reported each time that it is serviced, and data is aggregated monthly. Needle drop box reporting was modernized in 2022 to enable reporting via webform. The location of needle drop boxes in Ottawa may be found here . Residents, businesses and some City personnel use needle drop boxes to dispose of drug use equipment, therefore, there could be overlap between the needles reported through these streams. Accuracy : Needle drop box data is recorded by weight (kg) and converted to an estimated number of needles using a calculation based on average needle weight. The estimate does not account for the following: Other drug use equipment such as glass pipes, needle caps, tourniquets, cookers, containers used to collect needles such as pop bottles and plastic jars, etc. Medical sharps which differ in mass to the average needle weight such as epi pens, lancets, and other home health care medical supplies.
