Under the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations (MDMER), mines are required, as part of Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) studies, to conduct effluent and water quality monitoring studies, which include effluent characterization. Effluent characterization is conducted once per calendar quarter and at least one month apart on a sample of effluent taken from each final discharge point of the mine. Parameters and substances recorded under effluent characterization include hardness, alkalinity, electrical conductivity and temperature of the sample and the concentrations, in total values, of ammonia (until June 2021), aluminum, cadmium, chloride, chromium, cobalt, iron, manganese, mercury, molybdenum, nitrate (concentration in units of nitrogen), phosphorus (concentration in units of phosphorus), selenium, sulphate, thallium and uranium. Further information on the analytical requirements and conditions under which monitoring for mercury may be discontinued can be found in the MDMER.
