Air pollution is recognized globally as a major contributor to the development of disease and premature death and represents the largest environmental risk factor to human health (WHO 2016). Exposure to air pollution increases the risk of premature mortality from heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. The health and atmospheric sciences have advanced significantly in the past two decades, making it possible to estimate the number of deaths and illnesses associated with air pollution.
